As usual reality is more nuanced than an easy swipe against city-dwelling liberals suggests. The red-blue divide has split right down the middle of millions of our houses. We argued against Trump until we were physically sick, but these relatives were down a black hole. The stakes are not insightful either. I can never see some of my family as friends again.
It’s no small thing to have Civil War in your house. My brother said he was “coming out” to me as a science denier, and I should accept that as I would a GLBT brother. As I froze in horror at his words, I saw him continue on with the pledge of allegiance Trump voters give to Alex Jones, conspiracy theorist. To give me a final punch, he thinks he’s well-informed about politics and I lack critical thinking. A lot of us gave our all for this election, including ending a connection to a family member.
