Come On, This Is Cartoonishly Evil

It is almost as if it can’t be believed what Steven Mnuchin has done

Charles Dickens wrote him as a fictional character, and we are all loathe to believe that Scrooge himself was going to be incarnate.

Remember the Trump voter who was angry when she learned Steve Mnuchin was being appointed as Treasury Secretary because his bank had fraudulently foreclosed on her house? She’s got nothing on this story from Credo Action for Working Assets Political Director, Murshed Zaheed, who wrote,

Mnuchin’s company once changed the locks on one Minneapolis homeowner in the middle of a blizzard. It even took a 90-year-old woman’s home because she owed 27 cents. Mnuchin made a huge profit by buying up IndyMac, a mortgage lender, changing the name to OneWest and then targeting homeowners for foreclosures. Mnuchin later sold OneWest for nearly twice what he paid for it, profiting from economic pain.

Zaheed further wrote:

Under Mnuchin, OneWest ran a foreclosure mill responsible for nearly 40 percent of the reverse-mortgage foreclosures in the country even though it had just 19 percent of the market. Shady lenders made grand promises to sell elderly homeowners on risky reverse mortgages, and Mnuchin then swooped in to take their homes when Wall Street’s fraud was exposed and the economy collapsed. OneWest reportedly engaged in illegal “robo-signing” — falsifying documents — to kick people out of their homes.

Now if I were to write this character Mnuchin for a modern-day Dickensian story of poverty and classism in the United States, publishers would scoff at my lack of originality and boorish demand to see greed at its most grotesque.

“Oh please,” they’d think. “This so-called writer exaggerated so absurdly in her description of this Mnuchin fellow, she pains the reader.”

With how Trump World is already starting before he takes the oath, we can only hope Republicans have enough integrity to call their legislative representatives to counteract his actions, because the real elite are the only ones our GOP Congress listens to. Given that reality, God save us all.
