Do you believe we can achieve this new transformative social contract we so desperately need without violence? I would love to hope and desire for it to be so, but I am not so confident that authoritarians are going to give up the old systems without a fight
You have to understand the psychology of authoritarians. First of all, they are deeply fearful of change. Anything that smacks of new policy such as Universal Basic Income, which is actually what we should be doing, gets them hot and bothered. They grip their guns and their money and scream murder.
We can have truth on our side but the vested interests of authoritarian leaders can use tools of the modern trade such as social media and redpilling to spread white nationalism and patriarchy.
For example, my brother should not have been a candidate to be a Trump supporter. He was an Obama voter. He is not economically strained. But he was lured from Bernie to Trump, and he has been progressively sucked more and more into the Trump worldview ever since. It is frankly the most frightening thing I have ever seen. I took him to Dachau in the 1990s, but now he’s talking about maybe the Holocaust wasn’t as bad as the Jews said it was. And Stalin was their fault, because Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said so. He’s getting this stuff off of Reddit. Perhaps, almost certainly, influenced by Russians.
I’m not sure how we fight against that. It isn’t simple like you say. I can’t even convince my own brother to change his mind. He is brainwashed. To be honest, it is quite alarming and disheartening.
