Emma Lindsay’s “Concern For Polarizing Liberals” Is Better Expressed By Van Jones’s “Empathy”

Liberals are disgusted with Trump voters. They were before the election. They are after the election. There are articles both on and off Medium about this fact. Emma Lindsay gathered a list of these — for example, in the Washington Post: “Yes, half of Trump supporters are racist.” She used the hostile headlines to illustrate how liberals are committing rhetorical sins by writing polarizing rhetoric, which has led to ??? violence against Trump voters.

She uses PoliticalInsider.com as a source to verify that Trump supporters have been beaten up. PoliticalInsider.com has been identified by MediaBiasFactCheck.com as as strongly biased conservative site that has published conspiracy theories. In other words, it is not reliable. She does this in an article where she is arguing media bias that includes conspiracy theories is the influence on voting, not racism. Effective.

Anyhow, if some organization has done a poll, and found half of Trump supporters endorse racist statements, it is still unfair to focus on Trump’s supporters as completely racist. Emma says, “The thing is, we don’t really know why people voted for Trump.”

Van Jones makes a similar point in his article in empathy with Trump voters. He doesn’t leap to the unsubstantiated claims about liberal violence in the face of a sea of Trump violence, but he does make points about seeing complexity in the Trump voter.

My Christmas was spent with a Trump voter. He voted this way because he is a vaccine conspiracy theorist. “The CDC is hiding data about children affected by vaccines. Obama is somehow in on it, so Hillary would have been more of the same.” He spends time on Infowars.

I avoided the other Trump voters in my family who are basically racist or whatever it is to be hateful toward Muslims. Islamophobe? My mother had a huge blowout with her brother, a Trump voter, over “the War on Christmas” which is apparently being caused by Muslims ??? I would have thought Jewish or maybe black people were behind it since it all started over someone slipping up and saying Happy Holidays in front of him. None of these folks are hurting economically, by the way. They just feel threatened by changes to white, Christian supremacy.

So, yes, liberals, when they go low…we should go high. Because that’s what we always end up doing in the end. The emotional venting over the election, which seems apropos in light of the Batman villains Trump has already selected for his cabinet, will have to pivot from frustration at the flaws of his voters (are they racist? sexist? gullible? bad judges of character?) to dealing with the realities of the Presidency.
