For his sixth birthday, my nephew could have anything he wanted at Toy R’ Us under $30. He had two stuffed penguins at home. He picked out another stuffed penguin, so they would be a family. It was the sweetest, damn thing I have ever seen from a boy. He could have bought a gun. He could have bought a truck. It was nurturing and loving. And this kid’s dad lets him play that video game where you can kill hookers. The name escapes me. He’s not a “feminine” kid by the markers society defines.
I am wondering when the male socialization will kick in. When will he become like my other nephew who is uncomfortable with anyone discussing homosexuality in front of him at the age of nine? Like he thinks there might be something wrong with it, maybe?
I truly don’t think boys are “born this way.” I think it is something we are doing to them.
