Have you ever read accounts by women who have later-term abortions? I hadn’t until after Dr. Tiller’s murder. There are literally myriad reasons an abortion can be needed after eight weeks:
- Didn’t know you were pregnant yet. Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome don’t get regular menstrual cycles so they don’t know if they’ve missed one
- Fetus has a condition undetermined until later in pregnancy
- The life of the mother is put at risk by the pregnancy through any number of several pregnancy conditions
Since my sister had twins at 24 weeks and they are bouncy six-year-olds today, I get the impulse to ban later procedures. Then I listen to the women who are granted permission for late-term abortions — because they have to go through interviews with justifications to get them. They don’t even want them. They have to have them.
Then I watch what happens in Ireland or Bolivia or other such places where women die very public deaths for need of these late term procedures. Or the ten year old pregnant girls who can’t get them at all either.
Then it comes back to letting a doctor and a woman make the decision for themselves. The question is can women be trusted with the decision?
