How many artists with serious mental illness have you read or seen their work depicted? I just read an account of the prognosis of serious mental illness on Medium that would help you understand exactly why people with disabilities are not portrayed in Hollywood.
The very people who work with them are seeing them in terms of their weaknesses and through a lens of stigma
The Work that’s not Social
Among those things I’ve done in my life is the chasing after fires and nuclear meltdowns called Social Work.
When this is our frame of reference for people with disabilities, a place as status-conscious as Hollywood is going to avoid the stigmas that come along with disability. There is some cache in working against racism or sexism or homophobia. That’s cool right now. No one is really stepping out to be a champion for people who talk funny because they are death or because they are talking to voices.
Note: this has a 10% like rate. The same rate as serious mental illness in the population. Who has the highest stigma?
