I know that with my parents we were shocked that things just kept getting worse and worse. They were ultra-conservative — freelance fundamentalist Mormons who followed a “prophet” who called himself Onias. After everything happened, my father actually ended up an elected official in the Iowa Poor People’s Congress, which I don’t think exists anymore. They never really stopped being religious, but they sure turned liberal. Actual liberal, not the window dressing kind.
