I Hate You So Much Right Now, Microsoft
Apparently a security weakness in their file system (what?) has led the company to make it impossible to open files from the 90s in 2017 software
I have literally thousands of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access) saved in 1995–2003 versions of their programs. Why? Because I have been doing research, teaching, and writing for years. Today, I went to my archives to open some research and found it impossible to open the file.
Well, apparently it isn’t impossible. There is a company named Zamzar.com that I found that converts files from old formats for free or you can pay a fee to convert large batches of files at a time. But here’s the thing. Who wants to spend the kind it time it will take to upload thousands of files to the internet, and then download them again? I mean say what?
I hate you, Microsoft. You have taken valuable research and teaching materials and made them inaccessible. I didn’t even receive a warning this was happening as if it would have helped since nothing would spare me the time of converting all of these files. Upon my soul, I couldn’t feel more disgusted.
