I understand everything that you are saying about stigma placed on mental illness. The way people treat the group they see as mentally ill is devastating. I feel I need people to recognize that I am mentally ill. Because if they do not, then they never change their derogatory language about mental illness. They never make accommodations for people with mental illness in the workplace. They never pursue mental health parity laws to protect equal health coverage for mental illness as well as physical health coverage. Instead, what I want people to do is to just stop stigmatizing mental illness.
I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. My brother took his life as well when he was 23. I want people to know he had depression. I want people to know he wasn’t able to treat it because he couldn’t afford health insurance. But everyone is different, so if you don’t want to think of your brother as mentally ill, I understand.
