I wanted to highlight the entire piece. Everything you wrote is precisely accurate. For example, my mother was unable to maintain employment due to her mental illness. Nonetheless, when she is doing well she is known as the neighborhood “saint.” She uses her car to take every poor, elderly, or disabled person without transportation to get groceries, to go to the doctor, or just out to a fast food restaurant where she would sit with them and listen to their woes. She works very hard when she was able at tasks no one was willing to pay anyone to do. She volunteers for many other kinds of activities like to be a poll worker on election day. But, she’s swept up in the same stigma every disabled person carries of being burdensome, lazy, and non-productive.
I blame Herbert Spencer. Poor Darwin. He never believed anything like Social Darwinism. It was that Spencer who coined, “survival of the fittest.” He also wanted to eliminate public libraries, because they just encouraged the poor to desire more than their station. Some men are evil without even trying.
