I wish I shared your saccharine optimism. The middle class is a veneer. Once you fall from it, all the glowing can-do-ism in the world can’t save you. My family’s story exemplifies the horrors of downward mobility and books like White Trash by Nancy Isenberg tell the truth about opportunity for the poor in the United States. Escaping from poverty in this country has always been more like getting free of quicksand. I believe we are headed for even more stagnant and entrenched economic classes than we already have. Things like this new tax plan guarantee it. Unless the country changes dramatically, be prepared to see the middle class shrink more and more over time.
