I’m sorry I didn’t see this sooner to offer my support. When I was growing up, my mother used to comfort me by saying, “God will never give you more than you can handle.” I recall more than one episode screaming or pleading, “God, this is more than I can handle. I cannot take this much long-term pain.” When there was no relief and no answer, I became an atheist.

Since that time, I have developed different thoughts about God. I believe if there is a God, which there could be a supernatural force responsible for our creation, this God doesn’t intervene as people believe in our human affairs. He/she laid out our consciences for us already. Human beings are responsible for intervening to help other human beings.

The expression God helps those who help themselves was not meant to be a snotty comment to pull yourself up by your boot straps. It is actually a reminder to all of us that God works through men and women. I hope Clay’s idea is successful. People need to be there for each other. You don’t have to feel abandoned by God. God, if he or she exists, left you people created with empathy to love you and care for you. Bunches of us on Medium alone do. Hang in there, sweetie.
