Let me get in on this “people on awful” theme. I’m a secular humanist. I literally put my faith in my fellow human beings. That said, I am well known to say to my husband, “Damn it, there we go again, acting like cockroaches and weeds on this planet.” Making animals extinct, polluting the environment, taking advantage of each other, hurting each other. Like you said, it is sort of a relief to see someone just explicate how bad we are, because it takes the pressure off to be perfect or to go against our nature.

Heres where I disagree with Aristo Orginos though. He says no one is happy. If they think they are happy, they are wrong. I have spent the last year learning about dialectics in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). In this context, dialectics are two opposing ideas being true at the same time. I have found it to be a relief, and extremely beneficial, to realize this happens constantly.

For this reason, I believe people can be happy while also being stressed. Or even happy while being in early recovery from an addiction or other mental health condition, one of the most miserable times in a person’s life. You get the gist. I have feelings of wonder, joy, enthusiasm and awe this year, even as I watch Donald Trump and his philosophy rise in our country, one of the most depressing developments I have seen in my lifetime.

I watch humanity give us ISIS, while also knowing that with the peace treaty in Colombia, there is no longer any war in the Western hemisphere. It is a time of the least amount of war in human history according to more than one source I’ve read. Racism is going at a fever pitch while we have a black president. So, people are awful. They really are. At the same time, they are progressively better and better. They are capable of great things. They can impress you. I guess I am one of the infernal optimists.

Chances are I have a migraine. My spirit guides are Voltaire & Bierce. Considering making SJW into a religion. Genealogist
