Medium has been an invaluable resource in my writing career, which in my case doesn’t mean money, but access to the ability to influence opinion. My memoir has an agenda. I want my work to be considered as something a professor would assign for class.
I am certainly part of the creative underclass. There’s no doubt of that. I wasn’t an English or writing major. But, I have learned about pitch days on Twitter, which subsequently led me to actually finish a full draft of the memoir I have worked on for 25 years.
I think it is amazing Medium helped me finish the memoir, particularly by just getting me to write up stories I hadn’t worked on yet. They aren’t popular here. The excerpts have been edited off of Medium long ago with the professional editor I am working with. But the excerpts created some dedicated readers who connected with me on Facebook.
Readers inspired me to create a Facebook site for my writing. It’s only got 146 subscribers, but these are people who are signed on to read my book with no marketing. That many people wanting to read an entire book before it’s finished from a no name like me is sufficient to propel me through the editing process.
Medium has taught me so much about publishing including self-publishing, writing, making my own website, and then a thousand topical things to boot. This is highly valuable to me. The people I’ve met have been kindred spirits. I hope everyone can find ways to make it work for them.
