My grandfather crossed the ocean from Finland as a socialist. He died in the United States from the flu epidemic in 1918 never changing his political views from socialism. When I read his journal, I understood why. His American dream emphasized the worker. He was a working man. A hard working man. He wanted to be paid reasonably for that work. He wanted his society to value him. I think he would be disappointed to see the United States still hasn’t achieved his dream.
