Thank you so much for your supportive words. I believe you are right about what would have happened if I had reported the rapes. Women — well, girls — don’t report at such a high rate that I think that is the commonality between white women and women of color. It ends up being an equalizing factor. But we know from history what just the hint of an accusation from a white woman against a black man, in the South particularly, meant.
Please know that it is not hard for me to be an ally on race issues, so I am no exemplary person. Much of my life has been surrounded by black people, one woman in particular being the person who saved the course of my life. I wrote about her here.
You raise a very good point about athlete’s privilege. I think about what happened at Penn State, about how they now say pretty much everyone in the football program knew about Sandusky’s sexual abuse, yet did nothing. This is just stunning to me. The fact people continue to defend those who did nothing also amazes me.
