There was a club for gay people at my college, but to join it, you had to have a meeting with the professor who advised it. He screened you to be sure you were a sincere advocate for gay and lesbian people. Then they would disclose the location of the meetings, which changed regularly. I’m straight, so I didn’t try to join because there weren’t even allies as a concept yet. Many of my friends who were gay did join the group and they knew they needed this level of precaution for safety reasons. I remember all too well how things were. This was in the early late 1980s/early 1990s.
