We are only Africans in a very technical sense. It’s like the ridiculous statement Meryl Streep made that black people should be content that there are no African Americans nominated for Oscars, because we all come from Africa at some point. If white people can’t even acknowledge what happened to black people 150 years ago (and they never admit the long-term effects of slavery), why on Earth would it be legitimate to claim, “Hey, we’re all the same as we were back when Lucy roamed the Earth?” White people are regularly referred to as either European Americans or more commonly by their ethnicity (Irish-American, German-American, Italian-American — though the American part may be dropped because white people have the privilege of guaranteed American status). I know many black people who don’t like African-American. It’s a personal choice. But, what’s key is that white people should be respectful of whatever a person wants to be called. I’m sure most black people would similarly call you French or Irish or English or whatever you wanted to be called if you asked them to.
